Ideas for Bathroom Decorating

Need some ideas for that guest bathroom in your house? Try a rustic, earthy theme.

Read about how Brenda and her husband transformed their bathroom using tools and fixtures from Home Depot:

When we first moved into our house, back in June of 2006, everything was dated. That included everything in the bathroom, all the fixtures were still original, and this house was built in the 1970’s. We knew it would take some major work. One day, I was looking at the awful wallpaper, which had Eagles, the Liberty Bell, and America written on it. Knowing it had to go, I started ripping it off, that only took about an hour. The walls underneath were where the problems were. The walls were a mess for some reason, so spackling and sanding took us two days. While waiting for spackling to dry my husband gutted everything. We checked out a few local hardware stores, but they were all kind of expensive. We finally found a deal on everything that we wanted at Home Depot. They were actually cheaper than all the other places we looked at. We got everything we needed there: new toilet, vanity, and fixtures, as well as the flooring and all our paint needs. I wanted to go with an earthy feel for the bathroom; it’s a small bathroom in our downstairs area, with no window. So I wanted to bring some light into it. We put down multi-colored small slate tiles, which my husband hated every second of. He used the wrong tile cutter, we found out later, so it made the job take a lot longer, and was a lot harder. He used a tile cutter, and we found out he should have been using a wet saw. Live and learn I guess. The sink faucet we picked looked like an old well pump, so even the sink kept with the theme. We finished by painting the walls a very soft lavender, almost grayish in color. It brings out the color in the slate floor, which is my favorite part of the room. Then I, decorated the one wall with a brown wrought iron art work, and flowers every where they could go. It ended up being beautiful! It has a real earthy feel to it; it’s my favorite room in our house.

Kids Rooms Design Help

Check out what Kaitlyn has to say about her experience decorating her kids rooms:

My family and I recently moved to Vermont from California because my husband got a new job. We found a house for a great price with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The only problem with this house was that everything was white: the carpet, the walls, everything. We knew we had to add personality to the rooms, but we didn’t know how. I went searching for decorating books and found “The Big Book of Kids Rooms: Everything You Need to Create the Perfect Room for Your Child.” This book was full of so many ideas for dressing up a child’s room. I have two children: a son who is six and a daughter who is seven, so they had several ideas of their own for decorating their room. This book provided cheap and easy ideas for decorating, but they were not the most stylish. Instead the ideas were good starting points for deciding how to decorate a child’s room, whether boy or girl. The book gives eight simple room designs and offered tips on how to reuse old furniture instead of buying everything new. Most of the ideas required few items, typically only paint and other material. My son picked the nautical theme while my daughter chose the bug room style, but she did not use every piece of advice given. Additionally, the book was full of pictures for each of the themes. This made decorating a little easier, especially if the directions are hard to understand. This was also a great book for me since I had no idea where to start with the decorating process of my children’s rooms. I would recommend this book to anyone moving to a new home or redesigning their current home, but only for beginning ideas and for parents of relatively young children, ten or younger.
