Home Interior Décor: Selecting A Creative Theme When You’re On A Budget

Looking for a great way to create a warm and welcoming theme in your home? With a little creativity, it’s easy to do without spending too much money! Kirsten shares her tips on how she’s made the perfect place for her family and visitors – and it’s uniquely hers:

My home interior décor can best be called “warm eclectic.” In other words, it looks welcoming and it looks like my and my husband’s crazy sense of what is beautiful and worth keeping. Crazy doesn’t have to mean odd. We want the warm part to be the main theme. Our main living/family area is done around a small area rug that we bought on a trip. It’s not expensive or terribly exotic but it does look like it came from New Mexico or the Middle East (actually, the Middle East, but there are a lot of similarities in geometric patterns) and not down-the-street here in the Northeast! We used the colors in the rug when selecting the accents and accessories: strong, deep reds and browns and gold. Our furniture and drapes are not completely neutral, they are paisleys and flowers done in lighter greens and pinks as well as ivory and creme. The wall-to-wall carpet is a berber with a bit of green and brown woven along with the natural-color fibers. We chose some photos that we liked from our trip, sort of still lifes, and had them enlarged and framed. In the same wall arrangement, we included baskets/woven trays, a pottery plate, a shadow box arrangement. I collect all sorts of textiles, as long as they aren’t expensive. Here is where eclectic really comes into play. I have lots of pillow covers with embroidery or applique or simpler, solid colors. To fill them, I buy cushions at thrift shops and garage sales, then I throw a favorite shawl over the back of the sofa. At times, I have draped interesting fabric over a rod or simply tacked it in place on the wall. I am interested in warmth, color and personality. I don’t want to overwhelm visitors when they walk in the door – or have my kids over-stimulated, for that matter! I want my home to feel like it’s mine; and with even a small budget, some imagination and a little work, it’s not hard to accomplish!
