Pick a Home Decorating Theme
Home decorating becomes a little easier when you pick a theme. Read about the country theme that Julia and her husband used to transform their town house:
We moved into our house four years ago. Our house is a town house, which is very nice, but when we bought it, everything was decorated circa 1970’s. My husband and I first started decorating the dining room and kitchen area. We removed all the wall-paper, and got the walls ready to be painted, which took quite a while since the walls were in really bad shape and needed a lot of spackling and sanding. I thought a country theme would best fit our home, so we went with a cream wall on the top, then a white chair rail, and a red bottom wall. I love the split colors; the chair rail makes the dining room seem larger than it is. For the kitchen, we matched the same color as the top wall in the dining area, but did it a shade lighter, to make it seem more open.
My husband and I next worked on our downstairs bathroom, which, prior to us taking down the wallpaper, was also circa 1970’s. My husband completely gutted the entire bathroom. We then tiled the floor with slate, which was a lot of work and probably something which we will never do again. Once that was done, we bought a new toilet; supposedly, the toilet is so good, you can drop a bucket of golf balls down it and it will still flush. We also picked out a new sink, vanity, and a beautiful matching mirror. I wanted a light color to match the slate which is very earthy grays, tans, and lavenders, all mixed together. I chose a light lavender for the walls, then used iron decorations. I also used a lot of fake flowers, as the bathroom doesn’t have a window in it, so I wanted to bring the outdoors in as much as possible. This year we hope to tackle the living room, but with how much work went into the walls in the kitchen and dining room, I am not sure my husband will help me out to much. So, I am on my own here, but it will be fun!
