Decorating a Kitchen on a Budget

Here’s a tip for decorating your kitchen on a budget: find neighbors or friends who are renovating their house. Often, they’re getting rid of used fixtures that are still in amazing shape and would look great in your house!

I recently redecorated my home and saved a bundle of cash while doing so. How? Here are some tips I followed to get the best deals while still getting stuff that I loved. I wanted to freshen up my kitchen and was thinking of getting new cabinets, installing new counter tops and tiling the back-splash. I shopped around and got estimates from four contractors and quickly realized that I would have to make some sacrifices in material quality to afford hiring professionals. My next door neighbor was redecorating her kitchen, and she offered to give me her solid-surface counter top for free. The retail price on a similar counter would be around $3000, without installation. Thanks to my neighbor, I got a new counter top and ended up paying only $1000 for the installation. Next to the beautiful counters, the cabinets looked even more dated, so I decided to turn my attention to them next. New cabinets were out of the question, but once I scrubbed the cabinets with a no-rinse TSP, and refinished them with wood restorer, they looked almost brand new. Next I got hardware. I had no idea how much knobs and pulls could cost! I went to Lowes and found contractor packs, which included 20 hinges and screws, for $4 less than I would pay if I bought the 20 hinges separately. I also bought contractor packs of knobs, again saving money by buying in bulk. The only problem with the bulk pack is that there are limited styles to pick from, but if you aren’t married to a specific design, you can save a lot of money. Finally, I replaced my worn area rug with a larger, more stain resistant choice. While shopping at my local discount club (BJ’s), I noticed that they sold area rugs. Again, the selection was not fantastic, but I found an 8 foot by 10 foot rug for only $100. All together, I spent about $2100 for a completely new look for my kitchen.
