Bathroom Remodel Ideas
It can be really fun to redecorate your bathroom to recreate your favorite vacation. That’s what Brett and his wife did, and all for just over $200. A little research, creativity, and bargain hunting and they have a whole new beach bathroom they’re truly happy with!
When we decided to redecorate our bathroom, we kept in mind that while it needed updating, I also wanted it to be more relaxing for both of us. The old wallpaper came off easily with steam, and I painted the walls a light turquoise semi-gloss (from WalMart). We bought a bundle of 10, 2 3/4″ X 8’ pine furring strips from The Lumber Yard, which were on discount. We cut the strips at varied lengths, from 32″ to 35″, burned them lightly with a hand held blow-torch, and nailed them to the wall with the staggered edges on top. It looks like a fence you would see on the beach. We also installed sandy colored floor tiles (another DIY, at a cost of approximately $100 from Value City). I found a fishing net decoration, with a few fake starfish on it, from Amazon.com for under $10, and used my staple gun to attach it above and around the towel rack. The new towels are ocean blue, and with a matching bathmat, they came to about $70 at Kmart. Then from WalMart, we added a tropical fish shower curtain and a soap dish set with tropical fish, at a total cost of about $24. While visiting some yard sales last fall, I also found an old wooden oar ($2), and an old wooden bucket ($4) to use as the “new” wastebasket! I hung the oar on the wall above the mirror over the sink. It was a cheap project, in total I think we spent a little over $200, the most expensive part being the flooring. And now we have a way to remember our favorite vacation every time we shower…the year we went to the beach! I also used seashells we brought home from that vacation – they are sitting on a shelf, in a clear glass fish bowl (recycled). I want to paint some seagulls on the walls someday, but I just haven’t gotten to it yet. We really enjoy the new look, and it is relaxing, especially with a candlelit bath! We haven’t been able to afford another vacation to the beach yet, but the memories are here every day!
