Bathroom Decorating Idea: Island Paradise

Creating a room theme doesn’t have to be expensive if you use a little creativity. If it’s a theme that reflects your own travel loves, you can find very affordable ways to gather great items for your home décor while having fun in the process! Read what Sharon and her husband did to create an authentic “island” theme for their guest bathroom while they were on vacation:

I used an “island” theme for a half bathroom near the back door of my house. It is often used for party guests when we have backyard BBQ or luau. We wanted a festive, relaxed, away-from-home feel to the bathroom, in keeping with the tropical feel that we strive to convey with our parties. We also wanted to keep to a budget; no more than $200 to transform the bathroom. Since this was not to be a 4-star tropical resort theme, where very little island influence is felt, we were able to gather and use items found on our own travels. While on vacation in the Caribbean we kept an eye toward affordable souvenirs that would work well in the bathroom. We found a gorgeous huge conch shell with shades of purple and pink that had a wide mouth big enough to fill with potpourri to give a gentle island scent to the room. A trip to Hawaii was spent with lots of side trips to local galleries, where we found a perfectly framed beach-scape that provides a “window” to one of our favorite beaches. We were not successful at locating a suitable wallpaper to hang behind the framed picture, so we added that to our list of souvenirs to bring back from a cruise along the Mexican Riviera. We were able to make a lot of port trips while on our Mexican cruise, and admired some of the bright colors on the houses and shops. Our search for wallpaper came up empty, but we soon realized it would be much more authentic to match the pastel wash that was found on so many seaside buildings. By using a sponge to wipe a wash on the walls, our bathroom took on a very familiar island feel. We found a finishing touch for our bathroom when we stumbled into a small shop that had tropical signs made from various kinds of driftwood. Painted in the now-familiar hues of island washes, it welcomes our guests to a moment away in time, as they make their way to our backyard island parties!
