Decorate Ceilings: The Fifth Wall

It’s amazing what you can do with a little creativity and subtlety to decorate you ceiling! Charisse describes how she and her husband found an affordable and creative way to add personal character to their vaulted living room ceiling by adding painted stars that looked professional:

There’s nothing like personalizing a room so that you place your permanent stamp upon it. Of course, I don’t exactly know what psychological symbolism is reflected by the way my husband and I decorated our living room, but we are glad we did it. Reaching the vaulted ceiling in the living room was not as difficult as I anticipated, once we were able to navigate the 15 foot ladder inside the center of the room. Spray painting the multi-colored stars upon the white walls wasn’t too challenging either. The hardest part was creating the various starred patterns. After going to a local arts and craft store, we came out with foam board; day glow spray paints of blue, yellow and orange; and, a box cutter. After stenciling stars of differing shapes and sizes, we cut out the stars and discarded them. Left with the hollow exterior, we would press the foam board onto the ceiling and “fill” in the empty space with one of our spray paints. The best idea is to practice on a couple of surfaces away from where they can be seen since, inevitably, nothing goes as planned. The first stars came out looking more like bloated puffs on the wall: we sprayed too close and so the paint clumped. Spraying too long didn’t turn out well either as the slanted ceiling now made our stars streak – we weren’t going for shooting stars and it sure did not look like it either. In the end, it took the right amount of distance and a light “dusting” of spray to get the actual definition of the star. It also took larger and thicker poster board to project the image as desired. Aside from almost falling a couple of times and the crook in my neck from looking upwards for an extended time, it looks surprisingly good. It appears so faint and subtle on most days that it draws attention because of its lack of conspicuousness. Most people don’t bother to stare at the ceiling, but casual glance upwards reveals something more.

Bedroom Redecorating

What do you do with an old bedroom that’s 1970s green and pink? Re-do it! Top to bottom. And Melanie here gives the perfect instructions how! She created the perfect sky blue, healthy and relaxing theme. Read how she did it all herself and for a reasonable amount.

I decorated my own bedroom a while back. The theme was definitely blue. I was inspired by the fact that the bedroom hadn’t been decorated since my family had moved in and I thought it would be nice to give it a new look. It was fun to do, but exhausting. Initially, I wanted to paint my room a new color. It was originally a horrible, greenish color with a pink pattern! Ugh. I chose a sky blue. I had to move furniture around and some of the bigger items had to go out of the room in order for me to be able to do a good and complete job. I did a good chunk of it the first day but finished the next day. I also decided to paint the ceiling with the same color. The original color was white with another horrible, triangle-like pattern. Having a blue-colored room made the space feel very soft and pretty. I also put in new carpeting. It’s beige and plush. It covers the whole floor. I had help installing it and then the furniture was moved back in place. However, I had bought some new pieces and those went in first. I put in a new bed with a wooden frame and a dresser drawer to match. Of course, I had to get new bedding to go with the bed and bought a quilt, quilt cover, blankets and sheets, all blue! Lastly, I decided to add plants to my room, for better health and for additional, natural beauty. I bought two hanging plants and three small plants to put by the window. They definitely added a nice touch to everything. The cost was over $1,000 because of the furniture, which I got at a local furniture store. It took me a bit longer to complete the decoration of my room than I had anticipated, but I was glad to do it.

Interior Room Design Ideas

Sometimes the TV home redesigning reality show ideas are actually easy to make a reality! After seeing some of the ideas from reality shows, the Cunninghams found out they could recreate some of those themes in an affordable but effective way. Read their story:

When decorating our house, we didn’t go with a particular theme. We were inspired by the rooms we’d seen on some of the reality shows. We looked through catalogs, and we also browsed in stores. We got some of the materials at Home Depot but, also shopped at local area stores. First, we picked some new carpeting. We wanted a warm, comfortable feel and chose blue, wall-to-wall carpeting. It was very deep plush and was installed in the living room. We took down the old, faded wallpaper we had in this room and painted the walls. We chose to paint these walls a slightly lighter, blue color. We chose mahogany furniture for the living room and dining room. We replaced the older dining room table and the sagging entertainment unit. We got the table ordered from a local business and the unit from Ikea. It was a lot of work, as these are large items. We had to move (and store) many things until the items were put in properly. We left most of the upstairs untouched. However, we did get a new bed and dresser for the main bedroom and new wallpaper for the bathroom. We went with a flowery design, mostly yellow and blue. The kitchen ended up with a new floor. The tiles were marble-like in look (but not in price). This involved more moving of furniture. Wood paneling was bought for the family room. And a new table (also mahogany) was purchased and put in the room. We put in beige carpeting. The room ended up with a very cozy feel. While we never went for a particular theme, the accent was definitely on wood and the color blue. We ended up very satisfied with the results and were very glad to have gone through all the effort for it.
